The Ajuga Chocolate Chip Makes a Great Groundcover

About The Ajuga Chocolate Chip

The Ajuga Chocolate Chip name becomes this rather dense low growing perennial groundcover. With short blue spike flowers atop long slender leaves, this foliage, if given enough sunlight, will be a deeper chocolate color than if planted in a shady location.

Great for soil erosion, this dwarf ajuga is not nearly as invasive as the Ajuga Bronze Beauty, and yet still manages to form low dense mats of groundcover.

Many gardeners enjoy planting this variety of Bugleweed under trees, roses, in rock gardens or wall crevices. Plant this groundcover in an area where you can appreciate contrasting colors like matching up the Chocolate Chip under a Scarlet Flower Carpet Rose or the Yellow Flower Carpet Rose.

How To Grow The Ajuga Chocolate Chip

This groundcover does not care about soil type as long as it is well drained. If planting in full sun, make sure not to let it dry out. Conversely, this Ajuga does not enjoy sitting in wet soil either. The crown will rot.

Although it can be planted as a border plant, take care not to plant in a flowerbed without a proper solid edging material. This groundcover will creep into your grass.

Once established, the Chocolate Chip will tolerate light foot traffic, ergo many gardeners enjoy planting it in between pavers and in woodland gardens. The short blue spike flowers can be snipped off once blooming is finished.

Not likable to either deer or rabbits, the Bugleweed's blooms do attract butterflies and hummingbirds making it interesting to plant alongside the Salvia Lady In Red.

This is an evergreen plant and as such does not completely die back during the winter. I find that my ajugas come back to life very quickly in the spring.

The height remains dwarf at about 4 to 6 inches (this is the height with the blue flowering stalks) and it spreads anywhere from 12 to 18 inches...give or take. As mentioned above, the Chocolate Chip does stay quite contained.

Great companions plants have been already mentioned above, however others could be: all varieties of Roses, mixed in with Lavender or as a groundcover for underneath the Salvia Mystic Spires or the Salvia Black and Blue.
