The White Alyssum Annual makes a great container or edging plant...

White Alyssum

Alyssum - White New Carpet of Snow

About The Alyssum

The White Alyssum annual bedding plant is a great filler or edging plant for any flowerbed garden design however, for me this annual is a hit and miss in my flowerbeds. Some years the white variety does magnificently with bountiful blooms, spreading and mounding. Then other years this garden annual has been plagued by tiny flea beetles, which turns the white color into a sea of black.

However, when this garden annual performs well it spreads quite quickly and is very fragrant. There have been times where I can stroll through my garden paths and smell the sweet fragrance of these border plants. See the image below for the combination of the white and purple. The purple Alyssum is not nearly as fragrant, if at all.

How To Grow Alyssum

This sun loving garden annual also comes in pink, violet, deep purple and a light lavender color. Sometimes this annual come become tall and a bit leggy, just grab your garden scissors and shear off the tops. The plant will reward you with new growth. Also, if you can find the Tiny Tim variety, it mounds neatly and never needs shearing.

The Alyssum makes a great container filler plant among Geraniums, African Daisy or any other vibrant plant.

While my Alyssums have been attacked by the flea beetle, aphids can also be a pest for this annual. Spray with insecticidal soap and a blast from your hose.

Great companion plants are: Ageratum Blue Hawaii, Felicia Daisy, Angelonia Purple Mist, Dianthus or the perennial Forget Me Not.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.

Alyssum General Features:

  • likes full sun or part sun
  • goes to seed if you allow it to dry out
  • grows well in gardens or in pots as a 'filler'
  • grows to 6" tall
  • the white has a slight fragrance, the purple and others do not
  • no need to deadhead. If it slows down in blooms, simply shear the plant to half its size and it will re-bloom. Might take a couple of weeks, though
  • I like to plant this annual close together to give a good spreading show
  • frost sensitive
