The Appleblossom Flower Carpet Rose, a delicate pink groundcover...
About The Appleblossom Flower Carpet RoseFrom the Flower Carpet Series comes, the Appleblossom Flower Carpet Rose. A delicate pink and plenty of blossoms. Try including this prolific pink bloomer in your next flower garden design. The color reminds me of apple tree blossoms. The Appleblossom bud opens to a deeper pink but then softens to a pastel pink color. The leaves, like most of the Flower Carpet Series, are a glossy green but sad to say this variety has no fragrance. How To Grow the Appleblossom Flower Carpet RoseEven though I am not a Zone 5 gardener, I still plant this type of groundcover and to date have been successful. Most of us hardy Canadian prairie (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta) folk garden in a Zone 3. That being said, I cannot help but love all of the Flower Carpet Rose Series even though they are recommended for a Zone 5. These roses work well in containers and you can see in the image to the above right, how the shrub grows upwards around a wheel.
Similar to the other Flower Carpet Roses, the Appleblossom is an easy care Carpet Rose. No pruning or deadheading required, but in order to keep them neat and tidy, I shape in the fall and snip off the spent blooms. This compact groundcover shrub flowers from late spring to late fall and can be planted or moved in the fall, spring or summer. Just remember to water adequately and add a bit of MYKE growth supplement to the roots when transplanting. It does best in full sun and within a 3 year period the shrub will offer at least 18 blooms per cluster. Carpet Roses will tolerate less sun (4 hours or less), but with less sun, you won't get the same number of blooms.Water regularly until established, feed in the spring only and remember to add organic matter to the soil. Watch for good drainage as these plants do not like sitting in water. Conversely, once they are established, they do tolerate some dryness. Carpet Roses usually grow to 24" to 32" (about 60cm) in height and can spread to about 4 to 6 feet (1.2-1.8m) when mature. My Amber Carpet Rose has grown immensely in its first year (2009), at least a foot tall and wide. The Scarlett (two year old) has spread well over 2 feet since planted. Great companion plants: Dusty Miller, Dwarf Korean Lilac, Barberry Shrub or Spreading Evergreens.
