Astilbe Vision In Red...for a shade or part shade garden

Astilbe Vision in Red

About The Astilbe Vision In Red

Astilbe Vision in Red with its deep red plumes makes great mid size perennial for a shade garden design. With jagged, deep green and bronze, shiny foliage, the Vision in Red is exactly that, a vision in red. The red plumes rise above the plant and in 2008 I planted two. This year they have grown twice their size and are well on the way to becoming shrub-like. Both are planted in my shade garden, however they would do just as well in a part shade location.

The Vision in Red plumes seem to last forever until I finally clip them thus still leaving a wonderful bronze colored plant in the shade garden.

How To Grow Astilbes

Astilbes can be grown in containers and over-wintered, but be aware that you will need a large size container if you want to plant other annuals or perennials in the same pot. My daughter Stacie's Astilbe (grown in a large container) has grown huge and takes up the entire pot!

As with the other varieties keep them moist. They do not like to dry out. The leaves will wilt, curl and turn dry and crusty. Astilbes also prefer a richer soil so add lots of organic matter to the flower garden or the container.

These perennials are a bit slower to break through the soil in the spring so have patience and remember that you planted them. I tag my garden spots.

Great companion plants: Impatiens, Begonias or Dusty Miller.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
