The Athyrium Ghost Fern with stunning silvery fonds are great for any shade flowerbed gardens
About The Athyrium GhostThe Athyrium Ghost Fern with stunning silvery fonds, is easy to grow and requires deep shade in a flowerbed garden. This Fern (see picture below of the fern in my shade garden) is a cross between the Japanese Painted Fern and the Lady Fern. Because it requires mostly shade (the fonds will burn in the sun), I have it planted in among the Red Impatiens and the Astilbe Koln . If more of the silvery tones are wanted then a little bit of filtered sunlight will help bring out the silver. How To Grow The AthyriumDo plant this fern with the stunning silvery fonds in a moist area of your garden. It prefers an acidic soil but it is a fern that will tolerate a drier soil than most. I have no issue with moisture in my south flower garden so my fern receives adequate water. Before planting I added organic matter to the soil. In the spring of 2009 we had a late frost (June) the tips froze and turned brown. All it took was a snip of my garden scissors to cut off the brown and the fern began its re-growth. When touching the Athyrium Ghost to divide or transplant BE CAREFUL as the fonds are brittle and break easily. Other companion plants: Hostas, Brunnera,Heuchera Caramel, Coleus,Hardy Plumbago or Astilbes. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
