About The Baby Tut Grass

Try planting the Baby Tut Grass, an award winner grass-like annual plant for any moist soil gardens...especially around water features. But do be careful not to cover the crown of the plant in water.

I discovered the Baby Tut while touring a friends garden. She had both the King and Baby Tut planted in containers. I immediately surmised that this annual would be a perfect planting for my pond's edge...and indeed it is.

Did you know that the Baby Tut Grass is closely related to the Papyrus plant? Both plants have an arching growth habit and the Baby Tut has green grassy bracts and small greenish flowers, giving that tropical look. The flowers are really quite insignificant. It is the foliage that gives the interest.

How To Grow The Baby Tut

Plant this Tut variety in a part sun to filtered sun location. If you must plant in full sun, the leaf edges might brown a bit. This can also happen if you allow the plant to dry out. I just remove any foliage that turns yellow or if the edge browning becomes unsightly.

While this annual plant is really maintenance free, no deadheading required, it does require a fair amount of water. In fact it loves to constantly have wet feet. If you plant this grass-like annual in a container, plug up the drainage holes. This will help keep the water and nutrients in the soil. Having said that, fertilizing every two weeks is recommended.

I have mine planted up beside my waterfall. Lucky for me the waterfall splash hits the Tut and gives it the required water spray. Almost like my own humid mister.

This is a smaller variety, it grows to 24" to 48" tall and spreads the same. When planted in the ground, it is suggested to fertilize once a month.

I guess one could say that this grass-like annual can be called a Thriller, Spiller, and a Filler...not too many plants can be called all three!

Great companion plants: Petunias, Euphorbia Diamond Frost, red Potunias, Palm Sedges or the Alyssum.
