The Bidens annual, a daisy-like , fern leaf container filler plant

Bidens Annual

About The Annual Bidens

The Bidens annual bedding plant is a daisy-like, fern leaf filler plant for containers or hanging baskets. This year I included this annual plant in my garden design. With so many 'fillers' to choose from I decided on the Bidens and the lime green Potato Vine to share container space with the tri-colored geraniums. The daisy-like annual actually looks pretty good with the Salmon color Geranium . Also called Mexican Gold, the this annual plant has single yellow, 8-petal flowers surrounded by green foliage.

The image below shows the container flowers as of mid June. This annual needs deadheading if it is to continue blooming. So far (as of September 1, 2009) the fern-like leaves have not turned yellow and although it does take a small breather in between blooming times, the flowers are plentiful and beautiful.

How To Grow the Bidens

Always remember to fertilizer container plants once every third watering. The nutrients dissipate quickly from the soil and therefore feeding the plants in this case is important. Normally I would say 'feed' the soil.

Like most container plants unless they are succulents need adequate water. Do not let this annual dry out. Since their growth pattern is mounding, they really don't get long or leggy, but they can be sheared slightly if needed.

My two containers sit in full sun, so I cannot attest to shade growth, only sun and they do very well. You can also plant the Bidens directly into the garden as a border plant or use in a rock wall or rock garden.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
