The Black Knight Pincushion Flower Makes a Striking Statement in the Garden...

About The Black Knight Pincushion Flower

More than anything I chose the Black Knight Pincushion flower for its striking bold, deep maroon colouring. You could say that it is almost black in colour. This annual scabiosa would look amazing planted alongside the Monarda or Bee Balm.

The Pincushion Flower or annual Scabiosa has been cultivated for more than 300 years and there are many perennial varieties, some of which I plant. I enjoy the slight fragrance and although many gardeners do not like the floppy stems, I simply plant beside a sturdier annual or perennial and allow the long lanky stems to lean on the other plants.

Just know that the stem of the annual pincushion is not nearly as floppy as the perennial variety.

Watching this annual plant open to blooming is quite spectacular. As seen in the above image, the head looks like dozens of straight pins, hence the name. Even when the blooms are spent, the heads look quite attractive. I do recommend deadheading to keep the blooms coming. Cut the spent blooms (stems) at the base of the plant.

How To Grow The Black Knight Pincushion Flower

While this pincushion annual likes a full sun location, if the location is too hot, then afternoon shade is recommended. Soil type really doesn't matter, just make sure that it is well drained and that you fertilze bi-monthly.

As I mention on many of my pages, I add a half teaspoon of Myke's, a growth hormone to all of my annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees when planting. It really does make a difference.

The slender stems are clump forming and the Black Knight reaches approx. 24" to 36" in height. The foliage is also attractive, grey-green fern-like.

The Black Knight Pincushion flower is disease resistant and attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds making it very attractive for any type of flowerbed garden, rock garden or containers.

Great companions plants: Felicia Daisy, Nelia Argyranthemum, Purple Coneflower, Echinacea Double Pink, Coreopsis Zagreb or the Coreopsis Moonbeam.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
