The Calendula Bon Bon Mix. Double Blooms and an Early Bloomer...
The above image taken from my garden July 25, 2009 shows the Calendula Bon Bon Mix planted along with the GazaniaAbout The Calendula Bon Bon MixThe Calendula Bon Bon Mix annual bedding plant is a mixture of cream, yellow and orange double blooms. This variety is a beautiful mix of light yellow and a bright orange blooms. Last year I planted the ordinary Pot Marigold Calendula . I am not too sure which variety I like better. How To Grow the Calendula Bon Bon MixI must admit that the orange Pot Marigold variety grows to a more solid, sturdy annual plant than the Bon Bon Mix. I find that the stems of the mix variety weaker and the blooms are smaller. However, the mix variety blooms earlier and even though I think the blooms are smaller, the flower tags indicates they are double flowers in creams, clear orange and yellow colors. I planted my Bon Bon Mix in my middle garden right beside my stone welcome pineapple. These annuals can also be planted in containers and used as cut flowers. While they say that Calendula annual bedding plants do not do well in heat, they don't do any better when the weather is cool and wet. The wet and cool summer of 2009 gave way to many of my Calendula's foliage suffering from mold, stem rot and black spot. About 80% of my plants are affected. Remember to deadhead these annuals to encourage blooming. Great companion plants: Sedum Angelina, Gaillardia, Coreopsis Zagreb, Coreopsis Moonbeam or for a great burst of a contrasting pink color try the Sedum Autumn Joy like I did. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
