About The Cleome Senorita Rosalita

The Cleome Senorita Rosalita, a new cultivar offering the gardener a Cleome with no sticky stems and no foul odor.

I have planted the Cleome in the past and vowed never to again. The sticky stems, sticky smell and prickly stems were just to much to take. Also, I found the older varieties much more susceptible to pests and diseases.

Now along comes this new cultivar, the Senorita Rosalita, which is disease resistant, doesn't self seed (sterile plant) and no thorns. Hurray!

This Cleome is a workhorse in the garden. It blooms from spring planting right until the first hard frost. Blooming in spidery clusters of lavender pink flowers from 6 to 8 inches in diameter on tall sturdy stems, this annual or thriller plant makes a great background grouping.

How To Grow The Cleome Senorita Rosalita

This Cleome prefers an average soil type and once established with regular watering can be drought tolerant. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some part sun conditions.

Unlike the older varieties, this Cleome does not have sticky stems, thorns and does not need to be deadheaded. Growing not quite as tall as the other varieties, this Spider Flower grows 24 to 48" tall. Without deadheading this annual plant is a heavy bloomer.

One warning though, watch out for tiny green worms. My poor plant became infested and it was quite the job to pick them off. Tiny at first appearance (see image below), these worms grow quite quickly eating the leaves of the plant. And while the leaves either have holes or the entire leaf is eaten, the blooms are thankfully not affected.

Great companion plants: Sedum Autumn Joy, Salvia Mystic Spires, Salvia Victoria BLue, Felicia Daisy or the Lavender Anouk.
