Cleome Royal Queen Mix planted in my garden...

Cleome Royal Queen Mix

About the Cleome Royal Queen Mix

Planting the Cleome Royal Queen Mix annual bedding plants in flowerbed gardens can be a prickly affairSometimes called the Spider Flower, I found that the the Cleome Royal Queen Mix is best viewed from a distance since the stems are quite prickly. Remember to wear your garden gloves when handling this annual plant. I read in one of my flower gardening books that this annual can be foul-scented but I have not noticed this.

How To Grow the Cleome Royal Queen Mix

Most definitely a sun loving annual, this Spider Flower does not grow very well in part shade. I planted one set of the Royal Queen Mix in full sun location and another set in my south flowerbed garden, which is semi-shade.

Needless to say, the plants growing in the semi shade grew slower, had thin stems and smaller blooms, although the butterflies didn't mind the smaller blooms. They constantly hovered and landed on the blooms.

The Cleome planted in full sun faired better but unfortunately became infected with the tiny green aphids. Leaf miners can also be a problem.

If planting this annual, I suggest planting in mass for proper effect and planting along a fence, hedge line or among taller plants. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted and can add a definite attraction to any flowerbed garden.

Great companion plants: Cosmos, Purple Coneflower or the Double Pink Echinacea.
