About The Coneflower Meringue
The Coneflower Meringue (Echinacea) is a fully double cone of lime green, surrounded by white ray petals.
As the flowers age, the pom-poms expand and lighten in color. It is amazing how long each pom actually lasts before they begin to brown around the edges. When they do, simply snip off to keep the plant looking tidy. Pests do not seem to bother this perennial.
The 2009 year was the first year for this perennial in my garden. I just couldn't resist the color, the name for that matter or the fact that butterflies really enjoy the firm pom poms as a resting spot.
The Meringue Coneflower has huge blooms and a compact growth habit reaching from 16" to 24" tall and blooms July through to the end of August. Because of its low growth, it makes a great border plant in any flower garden.
Besides the production of creamy yellow/lime pom-poms and its dwarf growth, the Echinacea is said to be a potent medicine. Many believe that this perennial can increase immune function, reduce the effects of colds and flus, fights off viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Some also believe that this perennial can within certain medicines purify the blood and flush waste from the lymphatic system.
Great companion plants: Felicia Daisy, Campanula White Clips or the Speedwell Veronica.
