The Coreopsis Moonbeam, great bloomer, deep yellow flowers and deer resistant...

Coreopsis Moonbeam

About The Coreopsis Moonbeam

A sun lover, the Coreopsis Moonbeam with deep yellow daisy-like flowers has a long blooming time and is easy to care for in the flowerbed garden design. This perennial is from the Tickseed family. I just love growing this Coreopsis in my gardens, however over-wintering always seems an issue in my Zone 3.

That being said, every year I try again. And this year (2009) I have succeeded! The Coreopsis Moonbeam forms a wonderful taller mound of a darker yellow colored flower. As you can see in the above image my plants have a bounty of blooms.

How To Grow The Coreopsis Moonbeam

For the most part, this plant enjoys long blooming periods, is deer resistant and can tolerate wet sites as I have it planted alongside my pond. This Coreopsis makes a great border plant as its height only reaches about 12" to 15".

While I write below that this plant is rarely bothered by pests, I must say that this spring (2009) the white stripped flea beetle began to devour my plants. During the infestation I checked the plants every day and literally picked off every bug by hand until they were all gone. I still do find one from time to time but no more infestation.

As you can see by the above image, this worked and the plants are blooming magnificently.

Unfortunately these beetles also feed on the roots and my plants eventually stopped blooming (mid August). I cut them down to the ground and will wait to see what happens next year. This beetle over-winters in the ground so I will treat the soil prior to winter freeze up and again in the spring.

Tip

If your Coreopsis isn't over-wintering it may not be planted deep enough. This has happened to me. Plant your Coreopsis so that the lowest branches are at soil level.

Great companion plants: Petunias, Neila Argyranthemum, Ageratum Blue Hawaii,Sedum Angelina or the Coreopsis Zagreb.
