About Cornflower Amethyst In Snow

The Cornflower Amethyst In Snow caught my eye for it's bicolour of bright white petals and purple centers. Did you know that this Cornflower is the first bicoloured cornflower?

In the past, I have grown the annual variety of Cornflower or Batchelor Buttons as it is sometime called.

When purchasing this perennial, I chose a healthy plant with small buds forming and the foilage, silver-green, was clean and fuzzy to the touch. I'm not too sure what happened after I planted the Cornflower, but not long after the leaves showed signs of distress and a few of the buds turned yellow and fell off. Perhaps it was a plant shock and ergo I kept a careful watch.

Within a few more days, I noticed that the leaves were damaged as if something was enjoying the foilage as a snack. Low and behold, Bugs our resident bunny had been munching on the leaves. This was a bit odd as Bugs had not touched any other plant within the garden area.

Out came the Coyote urine and Bugs ceased to munch. I also decided to feed baby Bugs the cereal Cherrios (5 grain, no less) and not long after, Bugs ignored the garden flowers and waited patiently every morning for her/his breakfast cereal.

So, within a short 2 week period my poor Cornflowers weathered plant shock, Bugs and slugs. Today, the plants still show signs of the slugs, but the flowers are blooming and new leaves are emerging.

Some gardeners plant the Cornflower Amethyst In Snow as an edger or border plant, but I prefer to plant this perennial in the mid section of my flowerbed. Once established and healthy, I have noticed that it can spread quite quickly, however I would not consider it invasive...it just likes to have space or room to grow.

This is another perennial that attracts butterflies and sometimes hummingbirds. Deer do not like this plant, yet we know that rabbits do.

How To Grow The Cornflower Amethyst In Snow

Besides enjoying room to grow, this Cornflower grows in an upright fashion and can reach anywhere from 1 to 2 feet tall. It does prefer a sun location but will tolerate some part sun locations. I have read that once this plant is established it is drought tolerant, yet I have also read that you should not allow this plant to dry out between waterings. Then, another article says do not allow the plant to sit in soil that is too moist. Which is correct? Hard to say. Keep an eye on your plant and water accordingly.

This Cornflower is great for those who unfortunately have poorer soil conditions, so don't add any compost when planting.

Normally, the Amethyst In Snow blooms in May to June, however mine is blooming now and it is the end of July. It just goes to show that nature has it's own timetable.

Great companions plants: Felicia Daisy or try an underplanting such as the Campanula white or Blue Clips or the Sedum Dragons Blood. Other companion plants could be the Dogwood Shrub, the Salvia Victoria Blue or the Barberry Shrub.

If you are looking for a contrast plant, why not try planting the annual Marigold Durango or the perennial Coreopsis Zagreb.
