Cutleaf Lace Shrub

About the Cutleaf Lace Shrub

The Cutleaf Lace Shrub is a very difficult garden shrub to find. It has maple-like, deeply cut, bright green leaves and tiny white blooms in the spring. Makes a great shrub planted for soil erosion slopes. Last fall (2008), on a whim, I purchased two of these garden shrubs at a 'blowout' garden sale. At first I wasn't too pleased with them. I actually thought they were not going to make it through our harsh zone 3 winter. Low and behold they made it! They grew twice their size in their first year. They are spreaders so you may to have clip the branches to keep them from spreading too far. This hardy shrub would make a great groundcover!

How To Grow The Cutleaf Lace Shrub

This oriental looking shrub has fine, crinkled leaves on zigzag stems which arch and tend to weep downward. The foliage turns a nice reddish orange in the fall and in the spring it blooms tiny white flowers, which are really quite inconspicuous. If you can find these garden shrubs at your garden centre, it would be a good find indeed!

The Cutleaf Lace shrub is especially good for soil erosion or soil control as the branches root where they touch the ground. However, if preferred these branches can be easily pulled up from the ground and this will not harm the shrub.

The Cutleaf Lace prefers full sun but will tolerate a bit of shade. It doesn't like to dry out so make sure to keep it well watered until established. I planted my two shrubs at the edge of my larger pond by the waterfall and they have spread out far beyond their original location.

The above images shows my garden shrubs planted and surrounded by the Marigold Durango and the Potunia Red. This image was taken July 25, 2009.

Another great companion shrub is the Hydrangea Quick Fire or the Speedwell Veronica.
