Dianthus or Pinks, the variety Flashing Light offers bronzy carpet with stunning red flowers
About the DianthusThe Dianthus or Maiden Pinks are easy care, appear early in perennial flower gardens and bloom all summer long. In warmer climates the Dianthus or Maiden Pinks can be called an evergreen. In my zone 3 flowerbed garden, the Pinks die back each winter only to emerge in the spring with early vibrant color and long lasting blooms. How To Grow The DianthusWhile there are over 300 varieties of the Dianthus, I plant the Flashing Light with brilliant red carnation-like flowers on top of mounded slender bronze colord leaves. I am always on the lookout for sun loving, border perennials and this one looks like it will spill nicely over the limestone edging. I also like the fact that it is somewhat drought tolerate and deer resistant. After having said this, I must say that there is no such thing as a complete drought tolerant plant. However, there are some perennials, like the Dianthus, that can tolerate short dry spells. Even though this perennial can tolerate some dry conditions, it cannot be allowed to dry out, nor can be be allowed to sit in total wetness. Doing either one will result in the yellowing and browning of the mounded slender leaves. Plant in well-drained soil and water when dry and don't forget to fertilize at least once a month. Remember to snip off the spent blooms to encourage a longer blooming time. Mine begin to bloom in the spring and bloom through to the frost in the fall.
