The Ivory Halo and Red Gnome Dogwood Shrubs, compact, dense and upright shrubs for the garden.
Dogwood - Ivory Halo I planted two of these Ivory Halo shrubs in my south garden. Both receive morning sun and afternoon shade. In early summer I thought that I had lost the one in the above image. The leaves edges turned brown, curled up and dropped. It suffered Leaf Spot. Almost all of the shrub defoliated. Leaf Spot occurs in wet, humid conditions. I cleaned up the fallen leaves (in garbage, not the compost pile) and mulched around the shrub. Not long after, the plant recovered and now has a full compliment of new leaves and no browning. Note that this Dogwood does grow quickly. The one above, from a small sickly shrub, has tripled in size in one growing season, thus I will concur that it is a rapid grower! Companion Plants in my garden are: Ageratum Blue Horizon and Salvia Victoria Blue. The image below is the other Ivory Halo Shrub. Same companion plants but adding the Red Nicotiana. General Features
Dogwood - Red Gnome The Red Gnome shrub is planted in my south garden (in 2008). Unfortunately I forgot to winter cover this shrub and the deer chewed on the ends either in late November before the first snow or early spring '09. I am happy to report that it did survive the garden 'attack' but is on the much smaller side for this year. I just love the bright red stems, which make geat winter interest, and the fine textured leaves. Since this flowerbed receives only part sun, I know that this shrub can survive more shade conditions and moist soil. I have it growing alongside my Victoria Blue Salvia and my Nicotiana Saratoga Red . Either Red Gnome or the Ivory Halo can grow to be large shrubs. Pruning can happen at anytime without injury to the shrub, however many gardeners tend to prune their shrubs in the spring prior to the leaves emerging. General Features A must have shrub!
