My Dracaena Spikes Planted in containers and in flowerbed gardens...

Dracaena Spike

About The Dracaena Spikes

Dracaena Spikes are great planted in containers or planted as a background plant in a flowerbed garden.

I seem to go back and forth in my liking for this spike plant. In 2008, the planters on my front landing contained the Tri-color and the Wizard Coleus with Red Fuchsia . Looked fantastic!

How To Grow The Dracaena

Quite often you see containers with the spikes in the center and with Geraniums surrounding. I have also seen gardeners use the spikes as a tall background plant against their house or fence. I have done this in the past and know that this annual is loved by rabbits and unless you use a product to deter the fuzzy bunnies, they will snack on the plants until nothings left!

Last year many more gardeners planted the Red-tinged and Tri-color Dracaena, albeit they cost more, but I agree that they have a much more tropical look and feel to them.

Some gardeners move their spikes indoors for the winter and re-use the next year. Just make sure to first spray the plant down with an light spray of insecticidal soap and wrap either a paper bag or a plactic bag around the plant securing it and leave it for a few hours. This will capture the bugs roaming on the plant and in the soil.

Once inside, carefully remove the covering and rinse off the plant.

I leave mine outside in the planters for winter appeal.
