Evergreen Ogon, looks like a grass but is an evergreen...a grass like plant...

About the Evergreen Ogon

The Evergreen Ogon or Golden Variegated Sweet Flag makes a great ground cover perennial and is great for pond landscaping. Evergreen or neutral grasses aren't really grasses, they are a grass-like plant that never goes dormant. Did you know that this plant is actually related to the Calla Lily?

Early this spring when the snow melted, I noticed the variegated green leaves poking through bits of mulch... so did Bugs the rabbit.

I chose to plant this evergreen beside my pond as it does look like a grass and I really love the golden variegated leaves, which look like the leaves from the Iris plant.

I now grow three of these plants. Two of the plants are close to my big pond and are in line with my Scarecrow's view, which sprays out the water and scares away the little critters. However, the other sits by the edge of my smaller pond and yes, gets nibbles from Bugs. I would have thought that the slightly lemony fragrant leaves would deter them.

How To Grow The Evergreen Ogon

The leaves are not invasive, making them great for around water features and small gardens.

This sweet flag 'grass-like' evergreen keeps its beautiful golden color from early March to late November. It does prefer a full sun location, however it will tolerate some shade.

It does not like to dry out, so make sure to keep it watered especially when it is first planted. Unfortunately I find that this evergreen perennial is a slow grower and only likes to be divided in the spring.

Great companion plants: Palm Sedge, Dianthus, Coreopsis Zagreb, Verbena, Thrift or Stella D' Oro.
