About The False Cypress
The False Cypress demands little attention and makes a great specimen shrub for any flowerbed design. I purchased several of these shrubs in 2009 to fill in the back area of my waterfall. The image on the right shows the planted shrubs. As a semi dwarf shrub and a slow grower, the False Cypress will grow to about 6 to 7 feet in the span of 20 years. I love the green, golden yellow foliage and the weeping downward of the thread-like branches. They can be susceptible to Juniper blight, so keep an eye out for the tips turning brown and working its way down the branch to the stem. Of course there are others reasons for tips turning brown, like dog urine, and winter kill, but watch out as the fungi creeps in quickly especially if the shrub has had a wound (bark/stem) or winter kill has been severe. The fungi overwinters in the dead branches/stems so watch out in early spring when the fungi starts to spread. Also, too much moisture, wet conditions are a haven for this fungi to grow. The affected branches can be pruned back but do only when the plant is dry and sterilize the tools before and after. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
