Fuchsia for Containers or Hanging Baskets...

Fuchsia in Container

Purple and Pink Fuchsia ..in containers always my favorite for shade gardens...

Fuchsia Trailing Plant

About the Fuchsia

Try planting the Fuchsia shade annual bedding plant for vibrant color in containers or hanging baskets. What is more beautiful for any occasion or for your garden than a container full of trailing Fuchsia. How beautiful when the plants over-flow the edges? While the plants are not fragrant, they certainly are 'eye candy'.

Every year the decision comes down to, how many hanging containers will I buy this year? I normally purchase at least a couple to hang in my outdoor gazebo and then individual plants for my two front landing containers (see above image.)

How To Grow The fuchsia Annual Bedding Plant

This shade annual plant looks great planted on its own in hanging baskets, however when planting in larger containers, it is best to add contrasting plants such as: The Colorblaze Coleus, New Guinea Impatiens or even a perennial like the Ladys Mantle.

As with all of my container planting (especially the smaller containers), I make my own soil-less garden mix. This is really quite easy.

Here is my soil-less recipe for planters or container gardening:

In a 5 gallon pail, I add:

  • one package of Coco Earth which is a organic growing medium made from coconut coir, a biodegradable renewable resource
  • add 2-3 litres of warm water and soak and expand the coir
  • once expanded, add 1/2 litre bone meal (phosphorous)
  • 1 litre perlite
  • 1 litre vermiculite
  • 1 litre compost (my own)

This mixture makes about 12 litres of soil-less mix.

Peat Moss can also be used instead of the Coco Earth and the compost and bone meal is optional. Coco Earth can be found at many fine garden centres or go to Grotek for further information.

Please vist my Site Index Page for additional annuals and perennials to include in your next flowerbed garden design.

Fuchsia Features:

  • prefers morning sun, afternoon shade
  • Fuchsia's prefer a medium temperature...meaning not too hot, not too cold
  • don't use ceramic containers as they dry out the soil too fast, as does the wire baskets with the moss lining
  • keep plants moist, but not wet
  • use a soiless potting mix if you are planting your own containers. Makes the container lighter and the soil airier
  • watch for spider mites and aphids. I thouroughly check out my containers prior to leaving the garden center as most are already infected prior to you getting them home
  • I mist my plants often during the hot summer temperatures
  • I spray mine with insecticidal soap as soon as I get them home. Some say its over-kill, but ...my plants survive the whole summer pest-free
  • attracts hummingbirds because of the bright colors and the tubular blossoms
  • blossoms are nectar rich
  • blooms are single or semi-double
  • colors are lilac, pink and cream, deep purple and pink and reds
