Feb 7, 2010, Marrying Container Gardening With Your Hardscape

When creating your container plantings, give thought to location.

Step outside your back door and enjoy a kitchen herb garden. Or why not place a trellis (within containers) on each side of the door and allow a clematis vine to climb and frame the doorway. To finish the look, plant lavender varieties or tall ornamental grasses to keep the Clematis roots cool.

Take color from the house trim and purchase same color glazed pots. Better yet, purchase pots in a color opposite on the color wheel for a dramatic contrast. Place in groups and varying heights.

Add a bit of whimsy to your entranceway. Find unusual containers for planting. Old galvanized wash tubs, butter churns, birdbaths. Even wall hung containers filled with trailing annuals sends an impact statement.

And remember, if it's electric blue you want and your container is black?...spray paint it!

Feb 7, 2010, How I Tackle The Foaming Spittlebug

The easiest way to deal with the foaming Spittlebugs is to force them off plants with a water from the hose. On the ground, they become easy prey and succulent morsels for the birds.

Most of the time I do not have my water hose handy so I just wipe the froth off with my hands.

Take a look within the froth. In every case the green nymph is found within the froth.

Interesting information isn't it?
