The Geranium Rozanne, long blooming and makes a great groundcover perennial...

Geranium Rozanne

About The Geranium Rozanne

The Geranium Rozanne with long lasting flowers makes a great groundcover perennial or a border perennial for the garden design. This perennial groundcover was selected as the perennial of the year for 2008 and naturally with such an honor bestowed, I needed to see what the fuss was all about.

Indeed this perennial or cranesbill as it is sometimes called, has my vote as a carefree, vigorous grower and not bothered by pests.

How To Grow The Geranium Rozanne

The very first season, this geranium perennial gave me dozens of blooms. The following year I stopped counting the blooms. As long as you deadhead the spent flowers, which are easy to tell (the petals fall off), the blooming keeps on happening until the frost arrives. This must be one of the longest blooming perennials!

Mine are planted in my south garden, which gets mid morning sun and then afternoon shade. The soil seems to stay moist in my south garden and this perennial seems to love it.

On top of the slightly mounded green foliage emerges a deep violet blue flower with a tiny white center or eye.

In the above image (dated August 17) you can see the deeper color as the blooms first emerge. The as the flowers age they become lighter in color, almost like a soft baby blue. Each bloom lasts for a very long time.

As it grows, this perennial can get a little unruly looking, but I like it. If need be, a quick haircut/trim will not deter this perennial from continuing its growth.

The image below is from my garden taken in mid June.

Great companion plants are: Salvia Victoria Blue, Salvia Blue Night, Dogwood Shrub or the Ageratum Blue Hawaii.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
