The Geranium Vancouver Centennial Makes a Great Container Plant
About The Geranium Vancouver CentennialThe Geranium Vancouver Centennial (pink) is pictured above along with the Sweet Potato Vine and the annual Bidens. This geranium is great for container planting, window boxes or even hanging baskets. Just make sure the the soil is well draining and do not fertilize too often, otherwise you will get more foliage than blooms. Do you think that the name came from the fact that the leaves are shaped like the Canadian maple leaf? The foliage is so unique that some gardeners enjoy planting this annual for the deep-cut, rusty red to bronze colored leaves. Chartreuse coloring edges the rim of the leaf border and if planted in full sun, the variegated color deepens. How To Grow the Geranium Vancouver CentennialRemember that whether you plant this annual in a flowerbed border or in a container, well draining is the optimum. These plants do not enjoy being over-watered. In fact, once established they are quite drought tolerant. Plant in full sun to achieve the the best color in the leaves, although partial sun is acceptable. Pinching back the new shoots helps increase the bushiness of the plant. At full upright growth, this geranium reaches a height of 12" to 18" tall. So far I have planted the pink and reddish orange, but this geranium also blooms in red, orange and an off white. I find that the delicate star shaped single blooms have a tendency to fall off in high winds, however the plant does bloom repeatedly. Once the blooms are spent, snap or cut off the stems right to the base of the plant. Deadheading encourages the blooms to keep coming.
Great companions plants have been already mentioned above, however others could be: Verbena, mixed in with Euphorbia Diamond Frost or the annual Nemesia, which comes in a variety of colors. You can even try tucking in some white Alyssum as an accent. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
