The Goldfinger Potentilla Compact and Dense Shrub with Showy Yellow Blooms

Goldstar Potentilla

Goldfinger Potentilla

About The Goldfinger Potentilla

The Goldfinger Potentilla is similar to the Gold Star in that they both provide the flower garden with showy yellow blooms all summer long, right up until the first hard frost.

The exception is that the Goldfinger is not quite as compact or dwarf in size as the the Gold Star. The Goldfinger can reach of height of 3 to 4 feet and can spread the same.

Like all Potentilla hardy shrubs, the Goldfinger will require yearly pruning, which is really not that difficult. Just make sure that the dead twigs are removed each spring and if needed, the shrub can be sheared to within 6 inches of the ground.

For my Potentillas, I prune them when I first purchase, even prior to planting. I snip off all the dead branches and I also check within the shrub and remove any weak or dead branches. Thereafter, I give a light haircut every spring prior to the new growth starting.

One more extra thing that I do for my Potentilla shrubs is deadhead. Yes, I know, every gardening article mentions that the Potentillas do not require deadheading and technically, they don't. I just like the tidy look it gives the plant when I remove the spent flower buds. Otherwise, I find that leaving on the spent flowers gives the leaf ends a browning look. It's optional.

This Potentilla is also unappealing to both deer and rabbits and makes a great hedging shrub. The Goldfinger can also be planted in mass or as a foundation shrub.
