About The Goldstar Potentilla

I just love the Goldstar Potentilla shrub. Many gardeners and non-gardeners find the Potentilla family of hardy shrubs messy and too common a plant.

This can be true. However, with careful pruning and thinning out the center (meaning removing any damaged or broken twigs) of the shrub each spring, this shrub will give any gardener blooms to last the entire summer and fall.

And common? Well yes, but what other shrub can out perform a Potentilla? It blooms from spring to frost, is never bothered by pests (except for the odd Spittlebugs I found this spring) and is relatively disease free.

Besides, the Potentilla is hardy to zone 2, making it ideal for my garden. And I don't have to worry about the roaming deer or rabbits munching on the beautiful deep yellow flowers.

Try planting it as I did along the edge of my limestone in my middle flower bed garden.

How To Grow The Goldstar Potentilla

Dig a hole larger than the rootball. Add a tablespoon of Myke's growth hormone (optional) to the hole. If using the Myke's, make sure that the rootball of the plant touches the hormone grains.

If the hardy shrub is in a container, carefully remove the shrub and set the rootball into the hole. Make sure that the top of the rootball is level with the ground.

Fill in the hole with good soil mixture, which includes compost. Please see my Garden Soil page for additional information on enriching your soil.

Press down on the soil firmly and water. Mulch can be added around the shrub to conserve moisture.

Potentilla shrubs can be fertilized in the spring when pruning. Potentilla shrubs can withstand heavy pruning or shearing. Shaping them in the spring and getting rid of the dead wood inside the center of the shrub, helps to keep it looking tidy.

Some great companions: Salvia Victoria Blue, Barberry Shrub or the Dogwood Shrub,Spreading Evergreens or the Spirea Anthony Waterer.
