The Hardy Plumbago with showy deep blue flowers for the shade or sun garden
About The Hardy PlumbagoThe Hardy Plumbago, or Leadwort, over-looked by most gardeners, is a perfect groundcover for the shade or sun garden design. I have mine planted in shade, however this perennial does very well in a full sun location. In fact, being a native plant from the south, the Leadwort thrives in hot humid conditions. Did you know that the the name Leadwort was given for two reasons? For one, it was believed to be a cure lead poisoning. The second reason being a treatment for warts! How To Grow The Hardy PlumbagoPlant the Leadwort in front of garden shrubs, in containers or as an edging plant for the flowerbed design. This bushy shrub-like perennial blooms beautiful deep blue flowers. The leaves turn a rich shade of plum red and maroon in the autumn. In mid season if you shear back the foliage (to keep the plant looking tidy), this perennial will reward you with another flush of flowers. This shrub-like perennial can withstand short periods of drought and although the Leadwort can grow in almost any soil condition, the soil should be well drained. Rarely bothered by any insect pests, I can also atest to the deer and rabbits not liking it either! Great companion plants: Victoria Blue Salvia, Dusty Miller, Dwarf Korean Lilac Shrub, Begonia.
