The Hearty Helianthus Lemon Queen Sunflower

Helianthus

About the Helianthus

The Hearty Helianthus, with lemon yellow daisy-like blooms stands very tall in the perennial flower garden. This Lemon Queen Sunflower as it is sometimes called makes a great background planting for against a fence or at least at the back of a perennial garden design.

Why?

Because it can grow...up to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Mine stop at about 6 feet.

How To Grow The Helianthus

If I had to give any advice when planting this sun perennial it would be to plant it in full sun. Planting like I did in part shade resulted in a tall leggy plant.

Even though I inserted a tomato cage frame and the cage did give the plant some support, it grew beyond the cage in height and the stems were weak.

If planted in full sun, the plants are tall and upright, forming a bushy clump of green leaves, topped with branching sprays of soft yellow daisies in later summer and fall.

The blooms are excellent for cutting and I have learned that it can be pinched back in June to keep height lower.

Most plants will need to be staked and when ready to divide, the clumps are easily divided in early spring.

What I like most about this perennial is how it attracts the butterflies and not any deer or rabbits.

Great companion plants: Joe Pye Weed, Neila Argyranthemum, Heliopsis, or the Shasta Daisy Becky.
