The Heliopsis perennial with perfectly formed daisy like flowers

Heliopsis

About The Heliopsis

The Heliopsis or False Sunflower with perfectly formed daisy like flowers for any perennial garden design. Did you know that this sun perennial is closely related to the Helianthus? Both perennials look similar except that the Helianthus can grow 2 feet taller.

Their leaves are quite similar as well being jagged and a bit rough to the touch.

How To Grow The Heliopsis

I planted my Heliopsis towards the back of my south garden...up against the new cedar fence.

While this perennial can grow in part shade I do believe it grows better in a full sun location. The image above is from my south garden.

This False Sunflower grew to about 5 feet tall and needed staking. I have only a couple of plants so I cannot claim to have planted in mass for a dramatic appearance.

Plants form a tall, bushy clump of dark green leaves, bearing 2 to 3 inch golden-yellow daisy flowers. They make outstanding cut flowers. Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly extend the blooming season (8 to 12 weeks).

This sun perennial prefers a less rich soil, average to clay and when in full bloom attracts many butterflies. It is easily divided in early spring.

Great companion plants: Joe Pye Weed, Neila Argyranthemum, Purple Coneflower for a great contrast, Liatris Blazing Star or the Coreopsis Zagreb.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
