Hens and Chicks make a great succulent groundcover for any flower garden

Hens and Chicks

About The Hens And Chicks

Hens and Chicks make a great succulent perennial groundcover for any flowerbed garden design. Did you know this succulent is distantly related to the Aloe Vera plant?

So, just in case you don't have an Aloe plant, you can always break open a Hen and dab some of the liquid on a cut or burn. It's less effective, but could still work in a pinch.

How To Grow Hens And Chicks

Being an evergreen succulent, this perennial tolerates dry conditions, poor soil and colder climates, making it great for rock gardens.

They are easy to propagate as you only need to pull off a chick (looks like a tiny bud) from the mother plant (hen), which looks like a rosette and place into some soil.

Not too much soil is needed to have the chick grow into its own mass. And the cycle begins again where offsets grow around each other.

A note: don't panic when the mother plant dies as it does after it blooms, (long tall bloom). And don't worry... most have many chicks or offsets to take over.

It seems to thrive in average soil, but does need the soil to drain well.

Great companion plants: Rockcress Variegated, Sea Thrift, Ageratum Blue Hawaii,Sedum Angelina or the Portulaca.
