The Heuchera Caramel, Developed on the Canadian Prairies![]() About The Heuchera CaramelBecause the Heuchera Caramel was developed on the Canadian Prairies, it is probably one of the hardiest. This Heuchera is actually rated for a zone 3 and perhaps it will actually survive a cold prairie winter. The above reason is not the only one for choosing this Coral Bells (common name), as it is also called. I simply love the colouring. Such a warm apricot golden colour. And if planted where it receives morning sun, the colour become more vibrant. And if the above weren't enough this perennial also does well in high heat and hummidity. That's more than enough reasons for me to go and purchase additional plants! It does offer the gardener a cream coloured panicles of tiny bell shaped blossoms on long thin stems. Many gardeners simply grow this perennial for the large rounded foiliage. Ok, one final good point about this perennial...deer do not like it! Enough said!
How To Grow The Heuchera CaramelThe rule for this perennial is to keep it moist and well drained until well established. Then, it will actually tolerate some drier conditions. Remember to add some organic matter when planting. Try to plant where it will receive some morning sun. As mentioned above, it really does bring out the colour in the foilage. During the summer months remember to lift up the leaves and remove any that have browned or are in poor condition. The top of the plant may look great, but gross things could be happening underneath. Never give plant diseases an invitation to invade. I can only imagine how beautiful a pathway would look lined with the Caramel Heuchera. This perennial also performs excellent for container growing or in alpine/rock gardens. Like all other Coral Bells, the Caramel's growth habit is in clumps and can be divided in the spring. When dividing or planting add a handful of bone meal and a bit of fertilizer. I always reccommend Mykes, a growth hormone medium to add when planting. This product really does work to help establish annuals, perennials and shrubs. If planting this variety of Coral Bells try planting it alongside the Coral Bells Georgia Peach or the Coral Bells Harvest Burgundy or the Coral Bells Marmalade or try planting a variety of Astilbes.
