The Hydrangea Limelight, Extraordinary Lime Green Blossoms...

Limelight Hydrangea

The Limelight Hydrangea image was taken in August.

About The Limelight Hydrangea

The Hydrangea Limelight boasts extraordinary color with bright lime green blooms. The flowers tips fade to a rose/pink as the blooms mature. In a cooler climate such as our zone 3, this hydrangea tends to keep it's lime green coloring, whereas in warmer climates, the blooms turn to a creamy white coloring. As the Limelight matures, the pyramidal bloom size increases. This is a very long living shrub.

Plant in full sun to part sun. It really does require at least 6 hours of full sun to achieve it's best flowering performance.

Blooming begins in late July and blooms right up until the first hard frost. As the weeks go by, the flower tips turn to a rich deep pink. The flower heads are large, very similar to the Annabelle's size at 6" to 12" across. These elongated flower heads sit on sturdy, upright stems and don't really bend after a rain.

Because of the deer population roaming through the back of my property, it's always nice to plant a shrub that is deer resistant. As well as the deer not munching on this hardy shrub, the Limelight is drought tolerant and like other hydrangeas, does not like wet feet.

How to Grow the Hydrangea Limelight

Preferring full sun and well drained soil, the Limelight will tolerate part sun location. Winner of the 2008 Royal horticultural Society Award, this hardy shrub can be shaped into a small tree, which is quite novel.

Add a slow release fertilizer in the spring and prune in the fall once the blooming is completed. Blooming on new wood, it is better to prune this shrub when dormancy has set in. DO NOT prune in the spring as you may snip off the new forming buds.

Because of it's ability not to bend, this shrub makes great hedging, screens, slope planting and specimen plants.

Perfect companion shrubs and plants: Dogwood Shrubs, Sumac Tiger's Eye or the annual Salvia Mystic Spires.
