The Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Red, The Sweet Potato Vine
About The Ipomoea Sweet Caroline RedPlanting the Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Red has it's advantages. I have planted many other Sweet Potato Vines and quickly discovered how these trailing annual plants can spread and take over much of the planting container and crowd out the other plants. The Sweet Caroline, while mounding and spreading, is more compact and well behaved in container planting. Often referred to as spiller annuals, the Sweet Potato Vines certainly add the fullness required when designing planter boxes or any other container types. Like the other Sweet Potato Vines, this variety is also a vigorous grower, but can be cut back at anytime. Did you know that this vine can be over-wintered indoors? How?
I am going to try this method and will update How to Grow The Ipomoea Sweet Caroline RedWhen planted, the new leaves emerge a bright yellow/green, then change to a salmon copper color and finally to their permanent salmon red coloring. Preferring a sun to partial sun location, these trailing vines can trail to 60" and are only about 6" to 8" tall. Should they grow a bit too long or leggy, just snip off the unwanted section. This Sweet Heart variety is heat tolerant and very low maintenance with the only issue being aphids or the whitefly. Also, avoid getting the leaves wet as they can get a bit of leaf spot. The Ipomoea Sweet Caroline does prefer a fertile and well drained soil and regular watering. Great companions plants: Felicia Daisy, Petunias, Potunias or a variety of Geraniums, Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
