Joe Pye Weed and Baby Joe Pye Weed for any garden design
About The Joe Pye WeedJoe Pye Weed and Baby Joe Pye Weed are great taller specimen shrubs for the back of any flowerbed design. This tall shrub is not at all what you would expect with a name like that! The image above is from my south flower garden and was taken mid August, 2009. The Golden Elder is seen at the bottom of the image. This Elder makes a great companion plant. The image on the right shows the blooms and lovely shade of pink. Both the rabbits and the deer really appreciated me planting the Joe Pye Weed and ate it down to a stub. Like the other shrubs, it is growing back but I shall buy another larger plant and make sure to protect it better come the fall time when the (water blasting) Scarecrow is turned off. Did you know that a Native American Medicine man once said to have cured typhoid fever with it's roots. Also, history says that Native American people used Joe-Pye to induce perspiration and was also thought to be a aphrodisiac. Interesting... I love it for its tall growth habit and blooms. It makes an exceptional background specimen plant and is rarely bothered by the 'flying' kind of pests. I have found a worm or two this spring as the shrub was growing but that's easy to take care of...just pick it off...no need to spray. This shrub also gives the flower garden that special interest/color in the fall when other perennials have stopped blooming. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design. Joe Pye Weed Features
About The Dwarf Variety 'Little Joe'Ok...are you as tired as I am when I share with you my deer and rabbit feasts. Well, here's another one. Only this time I am not too sure that this shrub is growing back. We shall wait and see. UPDATE: June 15th. Yes, it is growing back, albeit very slowly. I will definitely spray all of my shrubs this fall. Deer resistant or not. Fluffy seed heads provide nesting materials for birds, while the flower heads last a long time. This is one perennial that does not re-bloom if you remove spent blossoms so leave old flower heads on the plant and let them go to seed. Dwarf Little Joe Features
