The Lambs Ear, a Great Texture Perennial Plant For Any Garden
About The Lambs EarMost gardeners plant the Lambs Ear for the leaf color and texture. Soft and fuzzy...silver and grey...this perennial can be found in many old fashioned gardens, including mine. Not grown or known for its purple flower stalks, most grow it for the texture, which is so soft to the touch. During wet seasons, take time to check underneath the plant for browning, moldy, wet leaves. This happens quickly and its best to pull them off right away. I check my plants regularly. And one last thing about wetness...try not to water from overhead. Yes, I know that rain comes down from overhead, but that's different. Go up close and water underneath the leaves. Your plant will look better. The flowering purple spikes rise up from the plant mid summer and stay colored for a few weeks. Many gardeners, not liking the look, cut off the spikes. I like them and wait until they look dried before I take the scissors to them. My Lambs Ear grows in my Middle Island Garden alongside my Gaillardia, Gazania and my Roses. This sun loving perennial would look stunning alongside the Lavender Anouk or the Salvia Victoria Blue. Another great companion plant: Calendulas and even the Petunias or Paper Daisy would look great planted close by. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
