Lamiums... perfect perennial groundcovers for sun or shade gardens

About Lamiums

Lamiums, come in many varieties and are great perennial groundcovers for either a sun garden design or a shade garden design.

A fairly common groundcover, this perennial grows well in any soil condition and is not bothered by rabbits and deer.

lamium orchid

Orchid Frost: After having planted the Herman's Pride variety in my garden, I have added the Orchid Frost to my sun south garden.

This Lamium is very hardy and yet looks quite delicate with its variegated silvery foliage and bright pinkish/lavender flowers.

Can you just imagine the Orchid frost planted amongst Hostas or Lavender. Stunning!

The only draw back to this perennial is towards the end of the season when the leaf edges begin to turn brown. This makes the plant look old and tired.

Orchid Frost Features

  • grows 4" to 6" tall, a spreader but not invasive
  • rabbit/deer resistant
  • will grow in clay soil
  • full sun to full shade
  • lavender flowers
  • great groundcover
  • re-bloomer

  • Lamium Yellow Archangel Hermans Pride

Lamium Yellow Archangel or Herman's Pride:

The image above is from my own garden. Just a reminder that this Lamium can be invasive. Every mid season I trim the long shoots back in order to keep control of this fast growing perennial. Besides growing lengthwise, the Herman's Pride also grows in height. I use my garden shears to trim the tops.

The Herman's Pride is great for under trees or in a shady spot where you would like some cover but rarely anything grows. It also grows in containers and is used by many as soil erosion control on embankments or slopes.

Because I garden in a zone 3, I can grow mine in a sunny spot and it does quite well.

    Hermans Pride Features

    • grows in shady areas and sunny spots in northern climates
    • great groundcover but can become invasive. Trimming is needed to keep tidy
    • yellow blooms in early spring to mid summer
    • drought tolerant
    • attractive to bees and butterflies
    • deer and rabbit resistant
    • has a mounding, yet spreading habit

    Lamium Golden Anniversary

Golden Anniversary: Although this variety does spread, certainly not to the extent of the other varieties. This one stays rather compact.

Used as a ground cover or a container as a 'spiller' plant, the Golden Anniversary is topped with lavender flowers in spring and summer.

I also like the fact that the edges do not turn brow towards the end of the growing season.

    Golden Anniversary Features

  • prefers full sun to part sun
  • grows short to 6" to 12" tall
  • spreads 12"
  • trailing habit
  • fertilize regularly
  • watering normal
  • heat tolerant
  • deer resistant
  • deadheading not necessary
  • blooms spring and summer
  • great as a groundcover and in containers
