Leopards Bane...an amazing early and long-time bloomer...
About The Leopards BaneThe Leopards Bane is a mid size, spring blooming perennial with yellow daisy like flowers on mouned heart shaped leaves. For some reason I thought that this perennial grew tall and lanky, like a regular garden daisy. In truth, the Leopards Bane flowers are very daisy like but the plant is much shorter...grows only to 18" to 24" tall. Therefore, I must move it to the front of the border. The flowers appear early to mid June and bloom until early July...just in time to be replaced by other mid blooming perennials or annuals. Deadheading the spent blooms does prolong the blooming period. In fact, I think that I got another week of blooming because of deaheading. How To Grow The Leopards BaneBecause this perennial is a spring bloomer, it enjoys a more temperate or cooler part of the garden. Perhaps a part sun to shade location, but please do not plant in your hot sun garden. If you do, and the soil gets too hot, it will go dormant. I have also seen this plant go dormant with very hot spring temperatures. While this perennial likes a cooler part of the garden, it does like well drained soil. Add a little sand and organic matter (even non-clumping cat litter works) if water rentention is an issue with your garden soil. Companion plants: Coreopsis Zagreb, Ajuga, Astilbes, Hermans Pride or Ladys Mantle. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design. Leopards Bane Features
