The Liatris Blazing Star takes the place of the invasive Purple Loosestrife.
About The Liatris Blazing StarThe Liatris Blazing Star's brilliant purple blue coloring takes the place of the invasive Purple Loosestrife in the garden design. I must say that this perennial should be grown in every garden. The perennial is almost indestructible. The only slight issue is the nasty Spittlebug trying to make a home within the fluffy florets. Easy to get rid of. Simply remove the foam by hand and within the foam will be the single nymph. Read more about the Spittlebug by clicking the above link. How To Grow the Liatris Blazing StarThe small fluffy magenta-purple florets grow on tall thin spikes and bloom from top to bottom, which is most unusual for a plant. While this perennial can tolerate a little bit of shade, it does perfer a full sun location. The blooms last for a very long time, mid July to mid August. Year after year this plant will spread but not be invasive, ergo many gardeners plant it instead of the invasive Purple Loosestrife. Deadheading does not extend the blooming on this perennial. If you choose to use the blooms as a dried flower, make sure to cut when the stem is almost at the tip in bloom. There is also a white variety and I have planted it in a previous garden but was unhappy with the results. The white becomes very washed out and dirty looking. This perennial is deer resisitant, however rabbits, bees and butterflies love it! The image above is from my garden taken August 27, 2009. Great companion plants: Victoria Blue Salvia, Dusty Miller, Dwarf Korean Lilac Shrub .
