Another hardy rose, the Morden Centennial Rose
About the Morden Centennial RoseThe Morden Centennial Rose has large 4", double, medium pink blooms and flowers on its own root. The flower has a light sweet scent and appears alone or in clusters of up to 15. My clusters are normally 4 to 5. If you find that your rose bush forms many buds at the same time, you may need to support the stems. I modify a peony ring support for many of my shrub roses. This way the stems don't fall over and hit the ground. This pink shrub rose flowers repeatedly throughout the summer with red rosehips produced in the fall. It has good resistance to powdery mildew and rust. However, watch for changes if the summer becomes too wet. Keep deadheading the spent blooms so as to encourage continous bud formation. If you like you can prune back the shrub in early spring for a bushier plant and more flowers. The growth habit is upright and grows to 4ft to 5ft, although I trim mine back to keep in check with the other flowers blooming close by. The medium glossy leaves typically have seven leaflets. It was honored with the Canadian Rose Society's Outstanding Cultivar Award in 1986. Great companion plants: Dusty Miller, Dwarf Korean Lilac, Morden Fireglow Rose or Spreading Evergreens.
