Another hardy shrub rose, the Morden Fireglow Rose
This image was taken from my garden on July 25, 2009
The Morden Fireglow Rose is another hardy Parkland Rose. For my northern climate, a zone 3, Morden Roses make the best selection. This shrub rose grows to about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The double blooms are orange-red on the insides and flaming scarlet on the undersides. It does have a light sweet scent, however my shrub rose is planted in the center of my middle garden and the fragrance is not strong enough to reach the pathway. The flowers, 3" inches across and 5 to a cluster, blooms repeatedly from early summer to frost on an upright bushy plant, which resembles a hybrid tea rose. My Fireglow does have the 5 buds clustered on a stem which can weigh it down so I make sure to have a support ready if needed. No sense in having the blooms touch the soil. While the dark green foliage is resistant to powdery mildew and rust, the sawfly larvae attacks with a vengeance. I must stay diligent all summer to rid this tiny, tiny worm from the leaf undersides. I simply rub off with my fingers. I also cover this shrub rose for the winter as I do for all of my roses. I use the method of dried leaves and then the styrofoam cap. Please see My Roses Page to read and follow planting instructions. Companion plants for the Morden Fireglow Rose: White and Purple Coneflowers or the Becky Shasta Daisy. Great bordering plants: Dusty Miller, Lamium or Ageratum Blue Horizon. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
