Nemesia, a great fragrant annual for containers and hanging baskets...

Nemesia Purple

About the Nemesia

Nemesia annual bedding plant is a great fragrant filler and spiller for garden containers and hanging baskets. Years ago when I first discovered this annual plant it was relatively an unknown annual and it only grew as a white variety. Now, years later and many cultivars later, this annual plant has become a very popular filler and spiller plant for containers, hanging baskets and flowerbeds.

How To Grow the Nemesia

I first purchased the white as I loved the heavy lilac fragrance and billowy look it gave to my containers.

Soon after I planted the deep purple as a contrast color even though it is not as heavily scented as the white.

There are now many additional colors to choose from:

  • Pink
  • Lemon
  • Mango
  • Pear
  • Raspberry
  • Cranberry
  • Plum

  • If you are looking for a compact Nemesia variety choose the Safari cultivar or the Dazzle Me Lilac. The Safari offers a very nice sweet scent and only grows 6" to 10" tall, which makes it great as a filler annual.

Another cultivar is the Bluebird, which grows 10" to 12" tall in an upright fashion and offers a clove-like scent.

The Sunsatia cultivar has the trailing habit (spiller) and grows 16" to 22".

All of the varieties are difficult to deadhead so if the trailing becomes too leggy or mounded variety looks messy, simply cut it back and the annual will re-grow with additional blooms.

Because some of the varieties offer such strong fragrances, why not plant them in containers and place close by a seating area...like on a patio or deck.

There are far too many companion plants to list, however here are a few of my favorites: Verbena, Potunias, African Daisy or the Angelonia.

Check out my Site Index Page for addtional annuals and perennials to plant in your next flowerbed design.

    Nemesia Features:

    • grows well in full sun or shade, but does prefer cooler temperatures
    • do not allow to dry out
    • no need to deadhead but you can shear off and the plant will grow back lush with blooms
    • grow in containers, hanging baskets, window boxes or use as a border plant
