About The Ninebark Coppertina

The Ninebark Coppertina Shrub, a hardy orange copper colored shrub gives an ideal color contrast in the flowerbed garden. By mid summer this hardy shrub turns a more reddish copper.

This is a very showy, very hardy and very easy shrub to grow. It is seldom bothered by pests, but watch out for aphids mid season. They like newly opened leaves and gather on the underside. I have had quite a few on one of my shrubs. Wash off with the garden hose or spray with insecticidal soap. Also, watch out for the curled under leaves. That too is a sign of pests making a home.

How To Grow The Ninebark Coppertina

Coppertina forms its flower buds in late summer of one season and then flowers in early June of the next season, so don't prune this shrub until after it blooms, mid-June to mid-August.

Then stop pruning by the end of August or mid September to allow time for the flower buds to form prior to winter.

As a young plant it is best to prune or pinch your plant in order to build a full, dense, well branched plant. I find that if I don't prune and shape my shrub, the branches have a tendency to grow every which way.

Also, don't plant in wind tunnels (where it receive hard wind gusts). The branches are not very sturdy and bend with the wind. This can cause the shrub to grow at an angle and look uneven.

Great companion plants: Firecracker Plant, Yellow Loosestrife, Rudbeckia Goldsturm, or Golden Rod.
