The Oxalis, a shamrock-shaped shade annual...The'Charmed Wine'Variety
About the OxalisThe Oxalis, a shamrock-shaped annual bedding plant for any shade container or shade flowerbed garden. When designing my shade garden, I wanted to plant some unusal annuals for just their foliage. I chose the variety, Charmed Wine. I came across this lovely delicate-looking plant in the garden center and could not resist. Two varieties were offered...so I purchased both, the Charmed Velvet and the Charmed Wine. The Charmed Wine, the image above is from my garden. How To Grow The OxalisThe tiny leaves are burgundy shamrock-shaped with green edges. Small delicate white blooms grow about 3 inches above the foliage. Grow this annual for its foliage as the flowers really don't stand out. Both Oxalis varieties are most definitely a shade plants and can grow to be quite large mounds. Great companion plants for both varieties: Hosta Sum and Substance, Astilbes, Ligularia Othello or Sedum Dragons Blood. TIP: Both varieties can be taken inside once there is a threat of frost and grown as an indoor plant. Make sure plant in a clean container, in sterilized soil and cover with a plastic bag for a few hours. This lets you see if the plant is infected with any bugs.Treat as you would any other house plant. The'Charmed Velvet'
The Charmed Velvet has lovely velvety black colored, larger shamrock-shaped leaves and delicate light pink flowers, which offers a great statement in my shade garden mixed with the Charmed Wine, Hostas, Ligularia, Ferns and Astilbes.
