The Easy To Grow Penstemon Husker Red
About The Penstemon - Husker Red - Beard TongueEvery sunny garden deserves the easy to grow Penstemon Husker Red. Beautiful red blooms on tall sturdy stems. The above image of the Husker Red was taken from my garden July 1, 2009. Did you know in Greek the Penstemon means five stamens (four are fertile and one is sterile). In the garden centers this plant can also be found under the common name of Beard Tongue because the sterile stamen has a tuft of small hair. Because of the tubular blooms, hummingbirds and butterflies love this plant. The hummers and butterflies also like the fact that the blooms are long lasting. If you don't deadhead, the birds will feast on the seeds. If you do want to deadhead just snip off the spent bloom right where you can see new leaves appearing. The second blooming is not as intense as the first. How To Grow The Penstemon Husker RedI have mine planted in full sun, however this perennial can tolerate part shade. It does not a well drained soil but not too rich with organic matter. With purple bronze foliage and easy growing habits, this perennial was Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year in 1996. Companion plants: Daylilies, Loosestrife Firecracker Loosestrife Yellow or Catmint. Please check my Site Index Page for additional annuals and perennials for your next flowerbed garden design.
