About The Phlox Red Riding Hood

My Phlox Red Riding Hood (pictured in the image above) nestles quite nicely among my Salvia Mystic Spires, Lemon Balm and Shasta Becky Daisy and although it is of a dwarf variety, this phlox stands tall with its fragrant dense flower heads and deep red colouring.

Blooming from June until September, this garden phlox is not a disappointment. Because of the sturdy stems, this perennial does not require any staking and remember to deadhead the spent blooms to prolong the blooming time.

My center garden seems to be a haven for hummingbirds and butterflies and by adding these cherry red blooms, the attraction becomes stronger for these magnificent fliers to stop by and feed.

Besides being a compact, sturdy plant, what makes this perennial even more pleasing is that the cherry red colour of the blooms never seem to fade. Did you know that the word phlox comes from the Greek meaning flame? Interesting given the bright red colour of this variety.

How To Grow The Phlox Red Riding Hood

Not drought tolerant, this phlox must not be allowed to dry out. Although it prefers to be planted in a sun to part sun location, the garden soil must be kept moist, yet well draining. Add some organic matter to the soil and perhaps top the soil with some mulch to keep the moisture in.

This phlox reaches only 15" in height and 24" wide making it perfect for border planting or planting in mass for a brilliant sea of red. They also make great cut flowers for inside arrangements.

I must admit that I do like to plant deer resistant perennials and annuals in my garden, so I just have to pay a little extra attention to the plants that require a moist soil and that are susceptible to powdery mildew. After having said this, the Phlox Red Hiding Hood is not as susceptible as other varieties, but I keep an eye on them just in case.

Some great companions plants have been already mentioned above, however others could be: Lavender Anouk or the Ajuga as a ground hugging perennial.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
