Portulaca...the annual succulent for hot, dry flowerbed designs
About the PortulacaThe Portulaca, an annual succulent has rose like blooms, blooms profusely and has brilliant colors of red, orange, yellow and pinks. In past plantings I have always stuck with the Grandiflora Sundial. Why? Because the Sundial variety does not close up as quickly or as tight in the evenings or on cloudy days as the other varieties. I also enjoy the that fact this this variety blooms 2 weeks sooner than most other varieties. The colors are fuchsia, orange, pink, scarlett, white and yellow. You can also purchase them as a color mixture. How To Grow The PortulacaI have seen these annual in containers, planted very tight together with great looking results. However, I still like to plant them as a groundcover close by my Roses or as an edging plant for my flowerbeds. Why not plant the Portulaca in your next rock garden. Having succulent leaves, this annual thrives in sunny hot locations and spreads quite quickly to form a dense mat of brilliant color. Deadheading not required. Some companion plants: Sedum Dragons Blood or the Gazania. Please visit my Site Index Page for addtional annuals and perennials to choose for your next flowerbed garden design.
