The Purple Coneflower ...attracts birds, butterflies and a breeze to grow...

About the Purple ConeflowerGrowing the Purple Coneflower with sturdy stems, late blooming and daisy-like flowers. A staple in every flowerbed garden design. Many of us know this sun perennial as the Echinacea plant and their herbal qualities (pill or lozenge), to help ward off cold and flu suffering. But for me the Echinacea offers stability in the garden. It is a native plant in my region and it has large, sturdy blooms with overlapping petals atop erect, solid stems. I think they look better if planted in mass, but not all of us have that kind of space. How To Grow The Purple ConeflowerThe Purple Coneflower that I planted last year and subsequently moved to a better location was started from seed by my son-in-law, Adam. Both the white and the purple have grown very tall, sturdy and are bloom magnificently. Please see image below. The blooms also make a great cut flower, but I have such a hard time cutting any of mine. Attracts butterflies and birds especially the yellow finch in my garden. The Coneflower also attracts rabbits so watch out in the spring when the perennials emerge from the ground and are the perfect level for the fuzzy bunnies. Check out my how to Deter Rabbits and Deer Page. Companion plants: Scabiosa, Salvia Black and Blue, Russian Sage, Ninebark Shrub, Ageratum Blue Horizon or the Ageratum Blue Hawaii as a border plant.
