The Purple Fountain Grass Makes a Great Accent Plant

Purple Fountain Grass

My Purple Fountain Grass planted at the larger pond's edge

About The Purple Fountain Grass

The Purple Fountain Grass (Rubrum) gracefully sways in the wind with its arching leaves and red, burgundy plumes. I'm sad to say that it is an annual in my zone 3, but that will not stop me from planting this drought tolerant grass year after year.

I am happy to report that this is a mounding, clumping grass and not invasive like the Ribbon Grass and others.

Resistant to the roaming deer in my area, this grass does well when planted for soil erosion, as pond landscaping or as an accent plant for container gardening.

How to Plant The Purple Fountain Grass

Plant in full sun and once established this grass requires only moderate watering. Adapting to any well drained soil conditions, this fast growing fountain grass requires little if any fertilizing.

While it will perform in a part shade location, the coloring of the leaves and plumes are a deeper color if planted in full sun. Flowering begins in mid summer and continues until frost when the plumes can be cut and used in dried flower arrangements.

One plant spreads about 2 to 3 feet and grows the same in height, ergo if planting as an accent plant in a container, one plant is usually enough.

Along with this Fountain Grass, I also planted (at the pond's edge): Hydrangea Quick Fire, Dwarf Arctic Willow, Swamp Milkweed. Veronica Speedwell or the Virgina Creeper.
