Red Flowering Plants, I have been asked many times to offer suggestions on certain types of colouring for flowerbed garden designs. This is difficult as I believe that flowerbed design and colouring is really a personal choice.

Looking back at all of my previous and current flowerbeds, I can see that I lean towards the more brighter reds, purples and deep pinks. I'm not sure why. Below are the red flowering plants that I have grown in my flowerbeds from 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Beside each common name I have indicated whether the plant an annual or perennial. All of the images are from my flowerbeds and with each page there is a description and also directions on how to grow and care for the plants.

So What Does The Colour Red Say About The Gardener?

Planting red acts as an energizer. The colour keeps a person alert. This colour lets people know that you are passionate about your garden. Red is a hot colour and many varieties of both annuals and perennials can have red blooms.

For instance:

  • The Nicotiana, comes in various colours, but I think the mid size red is by far the best.(Annual)
  • The Petunia, this page shows the pink, but it comes in various shades of red. (Annual)
  • The Potunia, a great red colour that does not fade. (Annual)
  • The Salvia Lady In Red, one of my favorite Salvias. (Annual)
  • The Verbena Aztec is a brilliant dark red colour. (Annual)
  • The Celosia comes in various colours. This page shows the orange as I tend to stick with this colour, but it does come in a beautiful red.(Annual)
  • The Impatien Plant is another all time favorite. I plant the Super Elfin Series. Great deep red colouring.(Annual)
  • The Begonia Vodka is my all time favorite Begonia. I just love the deep red colour foliage as well as the red blooms.(Annual)
  • The Geranium is an all time favorite of many gardeners. This plant comes in various sahdes of red.(Annual)
  • The Lily Crimson Pixie, is an Asiatic Lily and in certain sun conditions can seem a deeper orange than red.(Perennial)
  • The Dianthus, such a delicate, yet perfect edger plant for the garden.(Perennial)
  • The Little Business Daylily is a smaller size daylily with the reddest of blooms.(Perennial)
  • The Astilbe Koln is more shrub-like when full grown, yet the soft plumes are a deep dark red. (Perennial)
  • The Penstemon Husker Red is another shrub-like plant when fully grown (after about 3 years). Great foliage and delicate red flowers.(Perennial)
  • The Sedum Dragons Blood, is a great succulent plant that blooms brilliant red.(Perennial)
  • Flower Carpet Roses, the carpet rose is a low growing shrub and you just can't beat the shear number of blooms and the unbelievable colours! The Scarlet is simply amazing.(Perennial Shrub)
  • The Morden Fireglow Rose blooms continously throughout the summer.(Perennial Shrub)
  • The Salvia Hot Lips blooms in spurts. Hummingbirds just love this plant. (Annual)

So What Is A Good Colour Companion For Red Flowering Plants?

Once you have decided to plant red flowering plants...what else goes with the colour red? I have come full circle in planting my flowerbeds. I now incorporate flowering shrubs, variegated shrubs, annuals and perennials. This adds dimension to a flowerbed. Not all plants grow to equal widths and height.

Edgers can be the Sedum Dragons Blood, Dianthus, Petunias, Potunias, Begonias, Little Business Daylily or Impatiens. Why not mix it up and add some Dusty Miller in between the red. Another great contrast would be a yellow Marigold Durango.

A mid size plant is the Nicotiana, Celosia, Geranium or the Salvia Lady In Red. A bit taller and grows slightly wider is the Astilbe Koln and the Penstemon Husker Red.

Great red flowering shrubs are the Morden Roses, Carpet Roses and the Red Dart Spirea. Even the Magic Carpet Spirea that I grow has deep pink, almost red blooms.

For more of a contrast in shrubs, try growing the Dogwood with its silvery white and green foliage or the The Golden Glow Elder, with its lacey foliage.

As I add additional pages from my 2010 planting, I will update this page, so check back often. (Update: Added above) Coming soon is the Salvia Hot Lips...a great red blooming annual salvia.
