Red Flowering Plants, Annuals and Perennials...bright and perfect for any flowerbed garden...![]() Red Flowering Plants, I have been asked many times to offer suggestions on certain types of colouring for flowerbed garden designs. This is difficult as I believe that flowerbed design and colouring is really a personal choice. Looking back at all of my previous and current flowerbeds, I can see that I lean towards the more brighter reds, purples and deep pinks. I'm not sure why. Below are the red flowering plants that I have grown in my flowerbeds from 2008, 2009 and 2010. Beside each common name I have indicated whether the plant an annual or perennial. All of the images are from my flowerbeds and with each page there is a description and also directions on how to grow and care for the plants. So What Does The Colour Red Say About The Gardener?Planting red acts as an energizer. The colour keeps a person alert. This colour lets people know that you are passionate about your garden. Red is a hot colour and many varieties of both annuals and perennials can have red blooms. For instance:
So What Is A Good Colour Companion For Red Flowering Plants?Once you have decided to plant red flowering plants...what else goes with the colour red? I have come full circle in planting my flowerbeds. I now incorporate flowering shrubs, variegated shrubs, annuals and perennials. This adds dimension to a flowerbed. Not all plants grow to equal widths and height. Edgers can be the Sedum Dragons Blood, Dianthus, Petunias, Potunias, Begonias, Little Business Daylily or Impatiens. Why not mix it up and add some Dusty Miller in between the red. Another great contrast would be a yellow Marigold Durango. A mid size plant is the Nicotiana, Celosia, Geranium or the Salvia Lady In Red. A bit taller and grows slightly wider is the Astilbe Koln and the Penstemon Husker Red. Great red flowering shrubs are the Morden Roses, Carpet Roses and the Red Dart Spirea. Even the Magic Carpet Spirea that I grow has deep pink, almost red blooms. For more of a contrast in shrubs, try growing the Dogwood with its silvery white and green foliage or the The Golden Glow Elder, with its lacey foliage. As I add additional pages from my 2010 planting, I will update this page, so check back often. (Update: Added above) Coming soon is the Salvia Hot Lips...a great red blooming annual salvia. Below is an image from 2009 year. The red geranium planter.
