About The Red October Hosta

The Red October Hosta began it's bloom in late August. I had just planted it the month prior so I wasn't really expecting any flowers in it's first year. What a nice surprise. I think I can honestly say that the flowers on the Red October Hosta is the finest of all the hostas. When I purchased this hosta, the container had a small sticker on it with the name and a very fuzzy image. I had no idea that this hosta was as sought after as it is.

Within my shade garden are many hostas, but the Red October stands out with its red stem colour, extending up into the lower portion of the leaves. The leaves, long bluish green, have a white undercoat and have a slight rippled edge.

How to Grow the Red October Hosta

Although the Red October has a slower growth rate from other hostas and does stay on the smaller side, it wouldn't hurt to plant it as an edger. Or it can be planted in a mounded format, just so the striking red stems are shown.

They prefer a well drained soil but need moisture. Remember also to add some organic matter when planting. Growing upright, the top height for the plant minus the flower stalk is around the 12 inches and the spread is abut the same, maybe a bit wider. With the hosta blooming, the height is about 22 inches tall. I have mine tucked in front of my Ligularia Othello and my Oxalis Lucky Clover. Both give great contrast coloring.

A worthy note worth sharing: this hosta arrives late in the spring. It can be one of the last to emerge through the warming spring soil.
